A major international conference was held at the University of Tokyo in July 2000. From the point of view of differential geometry, the coffee cup and the donut are different because it is impossible to rotate the coffee cup in such a way that its configuration matches that of the donut. Helpfully, proofs are offered for almost all assertions throughout. We will describe the orthogonal projection taking a point in hyperbolic, or spherical n-space and mapping it along a geodesic to the point, where geodesic meets orthogonally the chosen k-plane of projection.

All we need are some rules or axioms relating things to other things and, there it is, a shape. It merely constructs these forms using local coordinates, which seems to be quite tricky to get to its bottom. Applications of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We shall trace the rise of topological concepts in a number of different situations. It even develops Riemannian geometry, de Rham cohomology and variational calculus on manifolds very easily and their explanations are very down to Earth.

Abstract manifolds and Riemannian metrics. This talk will introduce the motivic stable homotopy category and present the results of our computations. Certain problems in combinatorics may become simpler when interpreted geometrically or topologically. (Euler's famous solution of the Konigsberg bridge problem gives a simple example of a topological solution to a combinatorial problem.) There are many other examples of this phenomenon.

We provide a survey on recent results on noncompact simply connected harmonic manifolds, and we also prove many new results, both for general noncompact harmonic manifolds and for noncompact harmonic manifolds with purely exponential volume growth. The philosophy of Plato, in its presentation and its models, is therefore inaugural, or better yet, it seizes the inaugural moment. The course of human history has shown that many great leaps of understanding come from a source not anticipated, and that basic research often bears fruit within perhaps a hundred years.

[January 12, 2014:] A notion of graph homeomorphism., ( local [PDF] ) We find a notion of homeomorphism between finite simple graphs which preserves basic properties like connectivity, dimension, cohomology and homotopy type and which for triangle free graphs includes the standard notion of homeomorphism of graphs. During the late nineteenth century, the physicists had developed the theory of electromagnetism to a clear refinement with vector calculus that mathematicians such as the French Élie Cartan (1869-1951) later polished into the abstraction of differential forms and integration on manifolds.

Part III: Applications of Diﬀerential Geometry to Physics G. In the 10th century they went beyond Ptolemy. Stimulated by the problem of finding the effective orientation for prayer (the qiblah, or direction from the place of worship to Mecca), Islamic geometers and astronomers developed the stereographic projection (invented to project the celestial sphere onto a two-dimensional map or instrument) as well as plane and spherical trigonometry. Geometric topology is largely about the study of manifolds -- which are like varieties but with no singularities, i.e. homogeneous objects.
